CLUTCH

A mobile app to help us declutter together and better.

Overview

This project focuses on encouraging people to declutter their closet, no matter you are a shopaholic or minimalism, we all eventually have certain spaces of our closet, with a simple quiz to help people understand how to distinguish the feelings about clutter.

Me and my clothes share a complicated relationship.

Problem can't be hided

We all have "a closet".

With times, I often neglect how to treat my closet with a peaceful space, I thought I am a designer with organizational skills, but eventually, I got caught up by abusing my closet.

Problem that matters

Textile wastes

To clutter or not to clutter, it is not even a question. We are facing a fact that we should pay attention to our needs for clothing because:

  1. It takes 700 gallons of water to make a cotton shirt.
  2. The average American throws out about 82 pounds of textile waste per year.
  3. Clothes can take up to 40 years to decompose.
  4. Shoes can take up to 1,000 years to break down.
  5. 1/3 people who didn’t donate said it was “easier” to throw things out.
  6. Only 15% of consumer-used clothing is recyclable.

"Second to oil, the clothing and textile industry is the largest polluter in the world."

But, human loves to shop, its our inevitable nature.

Current solutions

Tools exist but users don't have self-motivation.

Design Question / HMW

Reflecting on current solutions, I ask myself how to have an approach more useful and user-friendly.
  1. How can we use a checklist more persistently and strategically?
  2. How to cultivate users a life-changing habit, not just a single-time challenge?
  3. How do we strategize a way to finish decluttering mission interestingly?
  4. How to help users to identify their needs and emotions for each worn clothes?
  5. What can we have as incentives for users to engage proactively?

Goal

Instead of solving one case, why don't we make this task less difficult?
  1. To create an interactive tool that is more sustainable.
  2. To help users to have motivation and being guided when they're lost.
  3. To build a community that users can reach out and encourage each other.
  4. To make inventory managemnet more user friendly.
  5. To be inspired by how Marie Kondo's success in decluttering by defining emotions for users.

Conceptualization

Takeaway

Our current solutions are great, but the point is if it is helping with sustainability, we need a friendly approach to support these tools and help users engage efficiently when they use it in the long run.

  1. Gamification
  2. Socialization
  3. Customization
  4. User focus (replace data focus)
  5. AR + AI ( potential implementation)

Future Improvement

If given more time, I'd like to think more about:

Design for better UX

I want to get more testing and refine my visual to have my interface works more user-friendly.

AI AR implementation

After my second iterations, I would like to add an AR AI scan feature to this concept.

Reward plan

I would like to think about how to make the visual design of my reward and socialization more interactively.
